Overview

What if French Rock were born with Edith Piaf? From sweet sixties pop to today's gender-indifferent anthems, from feminist rebels of the seventies to fashion icons of the social media age, from Françoise Hardy to Christine & The Queens, via Vanessa Paradis, Catherine Ringer, Charlotte Gainsbourg and many more, Oh Les Filles! tells the untold story of French female rock stars. Narrated by Clémence Poésy, this groundbreaking documentary combines interviews and iconic footage to radically reverse perspectives and give the patriarchy a kick!

A journey through the French music of the last decades through the female gaze. The structure is a bit chaotic, from personal appreciations to general evaluations. But the director manages to interview, more closely than usual, the main representatives of this incursion of women on stage, first involved in a rebellious masculinization and later accepting herself as a woman or with any other gender identity. Audience with deeper knowledge of French music will enjoy it better, but it's not a particularly relevant musical documentary.

A feminist rock documentary that is neither feminist nor rock enough. This look at French women in 'rock' (which apparently this film defines as 'anything not opera') is nothing more than a routine succession of Access Hollywood-style music clip / interviews. Maybe this should've been directed by a woman? The title itself illustrates perfectly my main issue with this film. _Haut Les Filles_ / _Oh! Les Filles_ translates as _Here's to the Girls_ / _Oh! The Girls_ and if you don't see what's problematic about that as a title for a documentary about women in music then you're qualified to direct this movie. (A better English title would've been _Her and Now_ or _Hears to the Women_ and why no one asks me these things is beyond me.) Have I already said a woman should've made this film?
