Monsieur Hulot, Jacques Tati’s endearing clown, takes a holiday at a seaside resort, where his presence provokes one catastrophe after another. Tati’s masterpiece of gentle slapstick is a series of effortlessly well-choreographed sight gags involving dogs, boats, and firecrackers; it was the first entry in the Hulot series and the film that launched its maker to international stardom.

I saw Playtime first, which I thought was brilliant, so this felt a little comparatively underwhelming through no fault of its own. It's just that it covers similar comedic territory and the shtick hasn't been perfected like it will be in Tati's later work. But still, this is a lovely movie (with a lovely, more comforting vibe than Playtime) and I can't believe Tati isn't as well known as Keaton and Chaplin. While this obviously isn't a silent movie, it sort of functions as one and feels very much of a piece as the early comedy greats.

I now saw Jacques Tati's last version of the film, which was also wanted by the producers in this variant. In addition, it has been extensively restored and the sound has been improved. I don't know the other versions, but I have to say that apart from a few small picture jumps, I didn't notice anything negatively. The picture and sound quality was really amazingly good. I liked the humor in the movie, even if the plot dragged on a bit. At this moment, however, I also have to ask myself: 'What was the plot actually?' Well, Monsieur Hulot just went on vacation somewhere. But I'll come straight to the next question: 'Who was Monsieur Hulot anyway?!' Even if this is shown in the film by the visual language, I can't be one hundred percent sure. Nevertheless, it's a worthwhile, funny movie in which there is almost no talk but has a great soundtrack. The cutest is the little boy with the ice cream.

Writer and director Jacques Tati plays the title character in this easygoing dose of vacation comedy. Hulot is a fun-loving man, perhaps a bit ignorant, whose oafish nature and noisy tendencies offend the stiff, upper-middle-class types vacationing in the same beach resort. Heralded by his spitting, More
