It seems pretty easy to make European horror. All one would have to do is start off weak, move into something confusing, add a bunch of obnoxious noises over the audio, mention something about an old god, and then end it 90 minutes later just as weak as you started.

Really, really simple... But do you know what? I love it! Simple but honest.

WOW, did not expect that. Wonderful creepy and full of tension. I liked the way it unfolded itself and how it ended. Very good folk horror, comes definitely on one of my lists!

It has some isolated moments that get disturbing sequences, an atmosphere of terror that is sustained by good sound design and a cinematography that manages to take advantage of the mist of the swamp. But the characters are flat and the development of the story is very conventional, with ridiculous moments (the relationship between Jonas and Betriek, the representation of the legend of Feike in a school play...). There is more atmosphere than consistency.

I gave this a pretty high rating because I watched the entire movie without getting bored or distracted. This is definitely an above average supernatural story of trauma being passed between generations.

Good movie but no jump scares

Since I can't turn off the subtitles, I couldn't make it through the opening scenes.

There was the potential for something good here but the story is underdeveloped. Some moments are chlling but there are no real scares here.

This Dutch supernatural horror mystery may fall apart a bit in the middle but is suitably atmospheric and creepy throughout. It's more of a family drama that's heavy on the atmosphere and I feel like it could have used a good trimming, but it certainly delivers some decent thrills by using familiar family curse tropes. The second act of the film is definitely not the strongest after an effective slow build at the beginning. Thankfully, it picks back up by the third act. Even if it does have a few silly moments and some cliched stuff, by that point you've already been sucked in. The lead performance is very solid as well.
