@jordyep No, the first one is how you fucking do it. The rest of the series is still trying to catch up.

@misnomer oh I like the first one, but it’s been outdone by the last 3 (I’d even argue the last 4). It’s not as memorable as the recent ones, and some set pieces don’t hold up.

@jordyep I beg to differ. The first is still the only one that managed to capture the feeling of the show, it's the only one with brains, with a lot of thought put into it (which was what _Mission: Impossible_ has always been about), whereas all the following ones (specially M:I2) are mostly brawn. _Fallout_ in particular was all about long chases and fights. It's just another action movie. But it's understandable how that may sound more appealing to a younger generation.

@misnomer Speaking as someone from a younger generation, I can tell you that my favourite movies have quite a bit of plot in them, but I think that's besides the point that you're trying to make. Yes, the latest MI movies have been lighter on plot, but that's fine, simply because McQuarrie and Bird understand what to give the audience in order to keep them interested (set pieces that are extremely well done, character dynamics & fun). Just look at one of the other best action movies of recent years, Mad Max: Fury Road. That one also has a minimized plot, but it's filled with set pieces, interesting characters and socio-political commentary. Just because an action film has more plot in it, that doesn't automatically make it better. In fact, I'd argue that that's where the first one falters, simply because its storytelling is too convoluted, which is a result of them shooting without a finished script. It might be closer to the original show that way (which I, in all fairness, haven't seen), but who's to say that a film cannot improve on its source material? I mean, do I have to bring up The Shining, or more recently, Ready Player One?

@jordyep from your initial comment, I was trying to see if you were just another guy into action movies, and I'm pleased to know you're not. You make good points, but I can't think of a single movie in the series that has improved on the first one. Maybe, in the end, it's all a matter of taste. I left the movie theatre completely ecstatic after having watched the first one (I loved the story and all the plot twists, to me everything was very well done and perfectly delivered to the audience). I've seen all the other ones (including _Fallout_, yesterday) and I've never left the theatre feeling the same way, there's always this feeling that there's something missing. _Fury Road_ is an unfair comparison, though, that movie was absolutely bonkers and it did feel just like the other ones in the series (_Fury Road_ was one of my favourite movies, that year).<br /> All in all, it's nice to have different opinions so that there can be healthy discussion about it. It was a great movie and a highlight in the series for you (and most people around here, it seems), it was just another action movie for me (but good one at that, hence my 7).

@jordyep I was with you up until you said that Ready Player One improved on the source material ;)

I was cringing at the antagonist’s dumb mistakes like I would the protagonists in a horror movie.

Movie took itself way too seriously to have such a generic motivation for henry cavil. First half of the movie was fine. IMO first half should've had more henry, and there should’ve been more focus on the fights rather than the chases. but the second half was so predictable and boring, really just took me outta the movie.

This movie is trash, and they should stop making this series.

@michael-scott-fan-page Good job on pointing out the main issues of this one and I'm glad that for once a critical comment is actually upboated on trakt. No idea why this got the cool "best non-Marvel action movie" vote on so many 2018 lists ;~.

@bumperjumper focus on fights? There are dozens of movies with hand combat. It's the cheapest thing you can do.

There is no other movie quite so spectacular, bombastic, unpredictable and morally interesting.

This was by far the worst movie in years. I had to laugh hysterically at the end because it had reached a Road Runner level absurdity. What a shame...

The last one was much better.
There was no clear motivation for any of the 3 characters Henry Cavill plays in this film. Boring and predictable ending as well. Also, why did they feel the need to bring back Julia?
Of course I loved _M:I-F_ as much as everyone else, but can you imagine the poor bloke who heard so many great things about it and went into the theatre with high expectations, only to be confronted with, essentially,
three long chase scenes separated by an inordinate amount of exposition delivered by two dimensional characters?
Wow, I'd feel so bad for him. But not me, because I loved it. A lot. Like the rest of you. So there's no need to unfollow me.

I now have a new favourite M:I!!!

There's not much else to say really. The action, stunts, effects, and cinematography is excellent. The story and screenplay work very well and tie the some loose ends up very neatly.

Though...there is one thing...

Prepare for the longest 15 minutes you'll ever experience. Trust me!!

Complete mess.
It's like the execs had a wishlist of scenes they wanted in the movie and someone had to write a script to fit.
The plot is so thin it was probably written with invisible ink on transparent paper.
Bring popcorn and set your expectations low.

Amazing and heartstopping action flick that does not disappoint. It's also not boring for a single second even though it has a long runtime!

Well I didn’t think it was possible but this one of the franchise is my second favourite, the plot was spot on, the action lived up to the first two and also had that feel from the first two. Tom Cruise still has some talent in him, energy to do his own stunts and amazed he carried on from a broken foot while filming.

I can't imagine the lengths they went to, to make this movie look real, but whatever they were... it was worth it.
