In some ways, The Memoir of a Snail reminded me of UP. The story follows Grace’s life, touching on childhood struggles, societal pressures, and family conflicts while sharing a message of resilience and personal growth. The snail symbolizes moving forward and finding beauty in imperfections, reflected in a line about celebrating cracks in repaired pottery. The stop-motion animation adds emotional depth, and references to works like Sylvia Plath and Lord of the Flies enrich the story. At its heart, the film is about human connections and the small moments that shape us, balancing heavy themes with warmth and humor.

Like Olympic gymnastics: technically perfect but pretty routine. The story of siblings' troubled lives feels like a novella and looks freaking great.

Perhaps a touch too much narrative and not enough acting, but a lovely work none the less. I love how in this movie most of the common mental health illness/ breaking points are being discussed, and joked on. It's always about how we view the world when it comes to mental illness, and the main characters together showed us how even we are in the same world, our world view can be vastly different, and that makes who we are. It's the most fun 100 mins I've had in any cinema house this year, and what a pleasant surprise it be from an Australian movie. 😊

An engaging life story, sad and depressing for the most part, but full of funny little details everywhere. It never gets boring. This is stop motion animation with a pleasing detailed and semi-realistic visual style and colourful characters.

Highlights include Pinky's biography and Gilbert's fami More

It feels great to laugh straight after you’ve just welled up.

The characters in Memoir of a Snail, the new animated tale from Academy Award winner Adam Elliot, feel authentically real to us - and even though Elliot includes jokes, he doesn’t joke ABOUT them.

He lays them bare to us with More

Australian animator and filmmaker Adam Elliot’s last full-length feature film was Mary and Max (2009). Memoir of a Snail is narrated and told from the point of view of Grace Pudel (Sarah Snook). Grace details her life story that finds humor and sentimentality in the face of depression, shortcoming More
