The 1990s was the era of movies about crazy women - e.g., _Basic Instinct_ (1992), _The Crush_ (1993), _Body of Evidence_ (1993), just to name a few.
The story will seem very familiar here, with some inconsequential details: A guy, Doug (McGaw), has a girlfriend, when she is away, he gets involved with Melissa (Ringwald), in a brief but torrid affair. Turns out she is nuts - it has been done several times, nothing new.
Despite the derivative plot, this is well made, and were it not for one weak link, it would be great. The weak link in question is Patrick McGaw. Look, it's not an easy role, he has to be a likable guy who, right off the bat, cheats on his girlfriend, which leads to the release of Melissa's fury. The movie needed a better lead. As it is, Ringwald, and Lassez, hold _Malicious_ together.
Moving on to Ringwald. You can tell she was looking to shed the good-girl type she was so well known for during the '80s - evident in the line "I'm not a princess." Given the legacy of this kind of thriller, we do get some sex scenes, and yes, we do get a fantastic view of Molly's Ringwalds... and they are tremendous.
Now, Molly plays Melissa with such a brilliant '90s bad-girl cool, against Doug's douchebag jock character, that I was on her side until [spoiler]she killed Mister Kitty! Come on! What did kitty do?! And I know this goes back to the rabbit scene from _Fatal Attraction_ (1987). What is with these psycho bitches and hurting little fluff balls? I mean, Catherine Tramell never hurt any little critters. Panties off to you, Catherine![/spoiler]
In short, the draw here is Ringwald. I just never cared about Doug, the college baseball star who cheated on his girlfriend, because she left the room for an hour.
If you're a fan of Ringwald or thrillers, give it a watch.
