Like a hand-me-down suit: faded, worn, and passé.

The most noticeable thing about the movie is how you can't notice a thing about the movie because of the dishwater filter they filmed under. What was supposed to be a film noir turned out to be little more than a film gray.

Beneath the murky sheen, it was difficult for Depardieu to shine, mostly because of the story they selected. I don't know much about Simenon, but if this plot and this ending is the best they can do among his 500 œuvres, then maybe they should've chosen another writer.

Depardieu does a fantastic job incarnating Maigret, but the film overall is little more than a made-for-TV movie with illusions of grandeur.
