So, this is an odd one. I saw the title, read the synopsis, and thought "how odd;" and indeed it is odd.
What might be the strangest angle for a documentary I have ever seen, Lynch/Oz suggests that David Lynch's career has been greatly inspired by _The Wizard of Oz_ (1939).
Now, I am not a Lynch fan, in fact, I greatly dislike almost all of his movies, yet I have seen most of them. On the flip side, I adore _The Wizard of Oz_ - I mean, who didn't grow up with that, as a kid? And that's a big part of this doc.
Lynch/Oz is broken into chapters, each one is narrated by a director - with only one exception. The narraters will talk about either Lynch or Oz, both, neither. in some places it really goes off the rails.
Before watching this, I had to wonder, aside from _Wild at Heart_ (1990), which has very obvious allusions to _TWoO_, what else could there be? Enough for a full documentary? Not really. However, it was nevertheless entertaining to hear these people talk about how much they like Lynch and/or _TWoO_.
Very early on, I couldn't fight the idea that this conspiratorial type of doc reminded me greatly of Room 237, and sure enough, one of the narraters, Rodney Ascher, made Room 237. While Lynch/Oz isn't as coo coo bananas as Room 237, it does have that touch of madness. Going as far to suggest that _TWoO_ is the root of all mind-bender movies. I just wonder what must have gone through the mind of our narraters when they were being asked to participate in this.
So, if you're a fan of _TWoO_ or Lynch or both, I think you'll really enjoy this.
