Loved the grotesque framing device, set in a circus atmosphere where Lola's ignominious history is paraded around as a sideshow attraction. But the rest of the movie never felt like it justified such grotesquerie. Carol's performance was forgettable and none of it really stuck in the way that other Ophuls films have for me.
