An excellent, relatively slow paced movie that depicts the real life of native Americans in the mid-19th century much better than the classic Westerns before. An excellent movie in line with Dances with Wolves.

This movie was political and taking on a serious issue before that became a thing. It's a Western in the sense that it is portraying a time and a place usually associated with that term. But it's missing all the cliches. It jumps from (mostly) being a comedy to a dead serious tone and back in an instant. And while I did laugh at the beginning I didn't at the end. Could have run a bit shorter as there are some parts that drag along or didn't feel essential necessary. Don't watch in on the side, take the time it needs.

Running time outlasted my interest. Good performance by Hoffman and some great age makeup...but simply not awesome.
