CONTAINS SPOILERS9/10 8 years ago
Smartest creature ever. Super adaptable, evolutionary. This is by far the bad assiest being ever imagined. The science in the movie was up to my extremely lofty standards. For the first time, ever in a horror movie, this thing could theoretically actually exist makes the movie extremely interesting. The main reason I gave it a 9, is due to the fact, they should have sacrificed the first guy, immediately. I had one other issue, but that would tip spoilers. Other than that, this is a great, thrilling, mind bender of a horror sci-fi movie.

And for those who ridiculously state this was "like Alien". This movie had a super intelligent, highly evolved bacteria. This was never done before. Actual physics and biology was implemented. It wasn't just some creature out of the mind of a teenager. The crew were attempting to contain and survive. Never before have I saw a movie, that was about containing an entity while above the planet. This used an actual space station, that is real and does exist. This was not a fairy tale of a movie, as was Alien. No one was hunting this thing down with guns and such. This movie is about what can actually happen as we go frolicking around our solar system. This is something that we should actually be worried about. That is completely ground breaking in every way possible. The Europa Report was closer related to this film, but even that was not as real of a threat as this movie, since it was on a Saturn moon, using theoretical science and fictional equipment. Life used all actual equipment, actual science, and actual crew reactions, although, I would have sacrificed the first guy, immediately and launched the immature state of Calvin at the first sign of an issue. And one last thing, Calvin didn't even kill anyone, except the first guy, who was attempting to incinerate it. I bet in part two, we will find out he is actually peaceful.

This movie was nothing like Alien. Besides the fact that the setting was in space and there was a creature hunting them down (or was he?). The Alien was killing, Calvin was surviving.

@blakblu I like your review. I mostly felts the same thing. I only wished, to complete the idea that the creature was only surviving, that they didn't give it an "evil" "face".
If it would have left faceless - then that would be absolutely right.

@blakblu "The science in the movie was up to my extremely lofty standards." Then you clearly don't know jack about science and physics. Non of the "science" in this movie was realistic.

@blakblu Well, I'm too lazy to go through everything, but a couple:

Right from the start physics is thrown out the window with the catching of the probe. You can't catch something like that in space. It's not like on Earth with gravity and friction and catching a baseball. There is this thing called inertia. That probe was moving way faster than the station and the Canada arm is not at all made for that kind of operation. At the very least it would have ripped the arm off and caused massive damage, likely causing hull damage to the station and knocking it out of it's orbit. And kiss the probe goodbye. Spacecraft are not made for that kind of impact. Try watching some videos of how rendezvous operations are conducted in space. Very, very slowly and precise. The slightest mishap could be catastrophic. Here is a video explaining how Soyuz lines up and docks with ISS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25hliOqpOB8

When SpaceX's Dragon capsule docks, they actually use the Canada arm to reach out and grab it to bring it in. Here is a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_BRFa6s9fs Arm action starts at about 1hr 25min in. See how slow everything is moving? 1hr 33min is a good spot for how fast the arm actually moves.

Catching the probe like in the movie? Beyond impossible.

Also, research the EVA suits. They are incredibly bulky and do not provide for dexterity. She would not have been able to close that valve with her fingers. They pretty much have to use special tools for everything.

Then there is the organism itself. Carbon based and needs water but is able to survive and thrive prolonged periods in the vacuum of space, and is apparently immune to fire. Yeah, no.

@bobbiebelcher This is full of spoilers, for some reason, I am not able to set the tag, I apologize. First of all, I'd like to say thanks, for discussing the issues, rather than the old fashion, name calling rigmarole, that is usually the case in these such forums. True the force on the probe would seem to be too much to be caught by a simple arm, but that was not what the movie was about. I could care less about that portion of the movie. But you are absolutely correct, they Hollywood-ed that portion, quite a bit. It really was not what I was referring to. I was mostly referring to the alien creature biology and its behaviors. Also the space suits were completely a Hollywood prop, these same suits are used by Hollywood over and over again, an actual suit would be bulky and the face portion would not be so camera friendly, but once again, not the focal point of the movie or of my comment.

As for the alien itself, Carbon-based, means, the organism uses carbon as fuel for growth, it has nothing to do with it needing water to survive in space, nor does it refer to anything about the vacuum of space, or its immunity to fire. There are many, many organisms that are not easily harmed by extreme heat. Also, there are many organisms that can survive extremely long periods of time in space. NASA has done multiple experiments in which bacterium was left in space for well over a year, and many of the various bacteria survived with no issue at all. The issue with space is the lack of pressure, ie, vacuum, not the lack of oxygen. A humans lungs will explode, and the skin will boil, because of the lack of pressure, far before a human would suffocate, because of the lack of oxygen. Thus, it would be no surprise to see such a creature survive in space, if it is not affected by the lack of pressure, as experiments have proven time and again, that these creatures do exist in real life, of course none are as complex a form as Calvin was, but Calvin was in a primitive form when it was able to accomplish this feat. After all, Calvin survived, for thousands of years, in a dormant state, on at planet with very little pressure Pressure-less space was not as harmful to it. The science was correct, at least hypothetically, of course. And that is the science that I am referring to.

@blakblu Given a creature, composed of multiple identical cells, grown from a single cell. Why the fuck would they think letting the ISS burn up in the atmosphere and shooting the "whole" one into space was a good idea? That thing could have littered the entire space station with single cells to later grow into full organisms.

@blakblu "actual crew reactions" If that blatant disrespect for safety protocol was supposed to be a realistic reaction from actual trained professional astronauts, then I guess this movie got its astronauts from the same place as Armageddon xD
