A Bond movie is never terrible, but some are more mediocre than others. This one is one of those mediocre ones. Not terrible, but there are better Bond movies out there.

One of the Timothy Dalton Bond movies I watched for the first time today. I can see why this flopped and no one ever recommends it. It's way too Americanised. The whole vibe is different from that of a decent Bond movie. Don't get me wrong. As a stand-alone action movie outside of the James Bond franchise this would have better appeal. It has good stunts for that era of film making, beautiful women and a plot that matches what was popular during the 80's. It even has Casino Scene, which is a trademark of the Bond franchise 😂. What's missing is the Bond character. Timothy Dalton looks more like an American detective than a 007.

I can understand some of the gripes about this movie as the lower budget was evident towards the end of the movie and the overlighting of the sets cases some color run. But I will say that this movie delivered where it matters most and that is the best plot since Live and Let Die. Ironically enough, this movie uses Live and Let Die's source material for inspiration with a drug dealer and David Hedison reprises his role of Felix Leiter. Also, the action scenes are some of the best and probably the best since For Your Eyes Only.

Starts out interesting with Bond going on a personal vendetta but it hits a wall the moment he meets the woman pilot. It becomes increasingly boring after that with bland and boring characters througout and that includes the women. The character of Sanchez seems to be written with Davi in mind but he is unfortunately as dull as the rest. The finale is explosive (literally) but it can't save the movie as a whole. Pretty generic and you could easily replace Bond with a Joe Smith. Giving "Q" a bit more to do than usual and a very young Benicio del Toro are some saving grace but that's ultimately not why I watch the movie.

I was just not a fan of Timothy Dalton's "007" and so can't say I was looking forward with much enthusiasm to this. This 007 film stays true to its motif.
This begins an era of "no fun" 007 films, where the wit is very minimal and every scene is whiplash brutal.
However, unlike most later 007 films, this one stays true to its design. It doesn't try to "contrive" the story. Instead, there is a flow.
