"Let the Right One In" is a very good film that tells the tale of Oskar a teen trapped in a cold land with even colder relationships. Then he meets Eli and his life is permanently changed though probably not for the better. Oskar is caught in the middle of a broken marriage and is the target of a bully. Eli provides some brutal solutions to these problems which endears her to Oskar. The nearly shockless reaction Oskar has during these moments of violence are the most baffling part of the movie. His dumbfounded reactions to the violence are distracting. He never appears frightened just bewildered by the horrors occurring around him. Sure his life has been dismal up to this point but he doesn't appear to be dysfunctional at all. In fact he's a smart kid who reads a lot. He never appears desperate for friendship and the friend he finds in Eli should raise plenty of warning signs for someone so bright. The setting of "Let The Right One In" is cold and stark just like its characters all of whom appear to be simply surviving their lives and are not truly living them. They're not dead to the level of Eli the young vampire but they're just existing with no real happiness or future. Their hopelessness is the most depressing part of the film. Many people have called this movie a "masterpiece" or "one of the greatest horror films ever". This is over the top hype. Its certainly different given today's CGI-ridden gore-porn horror movie climate and for that I'm grateful to have seen it.
