I think the most positive thing I can say about this second and final King Kong movie from Japan is that the ape costume looks slightly better this time than in "King Kong vs. Godzilla". But my god, is "King Kong Escapes" a dull movie. Boring characters, no sense of humor, and pretty weak effects even by Toho standards—all of this doesn't exactly make for fun. The movie also has virtually no ideas of its own. As in the 1933 film, Kong is a lusty monster who likes blondes. The villains, meanwhile, could just as easily come from a James Bond movie; the only difference is that the head baddie (even if he's not a Time Lord) is called Dr. Who and not Dr. No. Maybe hardcore Toho fans can relate to this, but unfortunately I can't.

It's definitely not brilliant - but the special effects would have been impressive for it's time. this was an era where Godzilla ruled the monster movie genre, and this was obviously made with that in mind (and many similarities) Worth a watch for the history, but don't have high expectations

"King Kong Escapes" looks like Toho Studios attempt to make a James Bond/Kong hybrid. First, there's an evil bad guy named Dr. Who. You know he's bad because he's wearing a black cape with a goofy collar (and he's got a really bad row of bottom teeth...poor guy). There is a beautiful but evil hen More

It's very easy for us to understand. You see, as ridiculous as it may sound, Kong is a male and, uh, Miss Watson is... Well, see for yourselves, gentlemen.

King Kong Escapes is directed by Ishirô Honda and written by Takeshi Kimura. It stars Rhodes Reason, Mie Hama, Linda Miller, Akira Takarada More
