Visual and aural experience to sit through. Performance by De Niro as Neil McCauley is something to behold. The amount of attention Michael Mann paid to details while filming this is insane. The action sequences are unrivaled, both in aural and visual sense. There's a sense of professionalism about them that you just won't get from anywhere else. It's only logical, Mann took all the actors to weapons training that lasted for 3 months. All of the scenes were trained on shooting range with built sets, using live ammunition and 3-4 people at time. The documents 'Making of', 'Return to the Scene of the Crime', and 'The Conversation' are essential and must watch after you've seen the movie. It's one of a fucking kind.

I never truly got the fascination with these two actors, and that was after seeing Taxi Driver + The Godfather i&ii, until this film. Brilliant on both ends, which is why the ending was going to shatter my heart regardless of the outcome. And it did.

I'm sorry but I really didn't enjoy this movie. The acting was alright but not enough to carry the movie by itself. The plot was straightforward and never made me care for any of the characters, it felt like everything was glossed over. Not a single relationship, be it between rivals, couples or family members made me feel anything, to the point that I even forgot that some characters existed in this movie until they were shown for another brief period. The plot shows you events (serial killer for example), but never expands on it, so it feels like it was tacked on and could have been cut to make the movie shorter. Speaking about length, the 3 hours runtime is really too long, and it hampered my enjoyment of this movie even more, because it started feeling like a slog halfway through.

I think that the movie didn't pique my interest with any unique features, the plot, acting and cinematography were all okay, but prolonged over a 3 hour period made me dread the time I spent watching the movie.

Heat has so many iconic scenes, it's impossible. The _"How about I buy you a coffee"_ scene. Two of the biggest stars face-to-face in one shot. Perhaps the best bank robbery to be seen in film with an absolutely unreal shootout. The _"Do we have time for this?"_ scene where Neil's journey goes the wrong way and of course the final _"I told you I'd never go back"_ scene and handshake. **Never gets old.** And I agree, Michael Mann's best film.

Michael Mann delivers a very satisfying heist thriller. The main plot is engaging but there were a few sub plots that could of been cut to make this a perfect movie. All the shootouts and heists are incredibly tense and were shot well. De Niro and Pacino both give fantastic performances at the height of their careers. The diner scene with them just talking is one of the best scenes and needs no action to make it tense. Both are fully realised characters and makes it hard to pick which side to root for. A little bit of over acting from Pacino, especially in that scene with Hank Azaria, but I love it.

Heat (1995)

One of my favorite movie quotes of all time:

Neil McCauley: A guy told me one time, "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner." Now, if you're on me and you gotta move when I move, how do you expect to keep a... a marriage?

You can clearly see how the visual language of this film lies the groundwork for movies like the _The Dark Knight_ and _The Town_ (darkly lit, naturalistic, lots of medium shots, no glossy or fancy camera movement, camera is always with the characters).
In my mind this film is kinda similar to _Sicario_, you have this script that’s fairly straight forward and slightly generic, but it gets elevated by the directing and the acting.
De Niro, Kilmer and Pacino are all great in it, though I don’t like these cartoony outbursts that Pacino sometimes tends to have (doesn’t really fit with the realistic tone of the film).
I also don’t think it justifies its runtime, this should’ve been 2 hours, as it takes a little too long to build up its characters in the first half.
But yeah, the second half is pretty spectecular. The entire heist feels like GTA without the satire.

7.5/10

First rewatch in a long time, and I really don't think it's as good as I remember. Everything is well done, looks and sounds great. But all a bit full of its own importance and men being menly.

De Niro gives a great performance, but Pacino is a tad too GREAT ASS! To work for me

What a delightful rewatch this was! This is Michael Mann's best film. And it always a good sign if a three hour film doesn't feel like three hours right?

Ps. She had a great ass!!

Heat is a brilliantly crafted crime film from writer/director Michael Mann. When a group of professional bank robbers are pursued by a relentless police detective they’re forced to choose between risking it all for one last score or having to walk away with nothing. Full of rich, interesting characters, the script is extraordinarily well-written and is able to interweave several subplots seamlessly. The film also features outstanding performances form an all-star cast that includes Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Natalie Portman, Danny Trejo, and Amy Brenneman. And Mann’s directing is phenomenal; as exemplified by the iconic bank shootout sequence, which is incredibly intense and dynamic. Stylized and thrilling, Heat is a compelling and sophisticated crime drama.

Robert Deniro stars as the leader of a crew of thieves. That were under the radar until a crook and killer named Waingro (Kevin Gage) joins them for one job. He kills the armored truck drivers during what was supposed to be a quick robbery.
With nothing to lose and the cops already on their tails. Deniro’s crew take on a risky bank robbery that puts them right in the open. For detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) to either make an arrest or put them down.
Heat has the best bank robbery scene of all time. Due to a great shoot out and awesome musical score. Heat was definitely Oscar snubbed for Best Director and technical awards. Possibly even for Pacino or DeNiro.
