Rita Hayworth turns in an incendiary performance, but the trouble is that she outshines every other part of this movie. We go from "Put the Blame on Mame" in one moment to a dry discussion of...tungsten cartels? George Macready (doing his best Von Stroheim impression) is dull and Glenn Ford is an empty suit. The film only works when we spend time with Gilda, but the movie writes her as nothing more than the object that others bounce off of.

I was a little puzzled initially as to why this film seems to be highly rated. The storyline is implausible and the dialogue is quite corny. The script was apparently written on the fly during production and it shows. I thought there were some similarities in the storyline to Casablanca and it must have been an influence (Humphrey Bogart turned down the lead role) but this film doesn't compare to that masterpiece. But Rita Hayworth is magnificent in this film and in particular her musical and dance numbers. I never knew she started out from childhood as a professional dance performer. There are some strange parallels with this film and her real life personal and professional relationships. She often cited extreme emotional cruelty as the reason for breaking up with her husbands. Also she said that Harry Cohn her Warner Bros boss would be very controlling about her, stopping her from seeing friends and blocking her relationships and even preventing her from going out.

I was loving this movie until the extra melodramatic third act. Had potential to be one of my faves but got a little too cheesy in the end. Still... Rita Hayworth makes every moment of the film worth it.

Gilda is just like Casablanca if Casablanca had a happy ending, which would have been a bad idea even if it hadn’t been already done two years earlier in To Have and Have Not (which at least had Bogie in it).

Like Casablanca, Gilda revolves around a love triangle set in a gambling establishmen More
