Frank (Chris Evans) has been left to raise his child prodigy niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) after the death of her mother. Franks estranged mother Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan) seeks to take custody of Mary.

Wow, what a pleasant surprise this movie was. Chris Evans is wonderful and gave a really strong performance. The writing is really good and created some easily liked characters that makes it easy for you to care for them. Mckenna Grace is so adorable as the niece and controls her character with such emotion.

Some of the other performances while not all necessary are still a welcome surprise. Lindsay Duncan as the mother trying to take away Mary plays her in such a way that while you could consider her act quite evil of taking away a child from their guardian, in her eyes she is doing what she thinks his best. Whether you agree on her actions is another question. Jenny Slate as the teacher felt a bit like a burden at first and I didn't really understand her purpose. She grew on me as the film progressed, while not entirely needed, she had some good scenes with Evans that made me get to know Frank a little more. Spencer is a good actress, but I could have done without her in this movie if I am honest.

While not a complex movie, the character moments are what made it a good film for me. The problems that stop if being a great one for me is the second half of the movie. It is still enjoyable but it's a little too predictable and loses the spark the first half had. I did enjoy the ending of this film, while it was nothing special, it had a good moment between Evans and Duncan that I liked. The conversation between the two was well acted and well written.

Gifted was a heart-warming movie that I had a good time with. 7/10.
