Another stage (Broadway Musical) production filmed and brought to the world through movie theatres. (I'm very grateful for these). The vocal talents were unparalleled. Lea Salonga and Telly Leung bring brilliant performances. Christopheren Nomura classically trained baritone brings an extra gravitas to his role. With the wealth of Asian talent available and underutilized in the industry this production had access to the best of the best in starring and supporting roles. The story was important - in both Canada and the United States the treatment of immigrated Japanese was harsh and soul breaking, and we need to remember that they, too, sacrificed along with the rest of their adopted nation. The story telling however was a little ragged, some lyrics should have been said, not sung, and emotional transitions were rushed, especially the pivotable one that framed the story arch. Because the lyrics were sacrificed to convey dialogue the musical didn't have songs that transcended the production to become emotional anthems of the human experience. I give his production a 7 (good) out of 10 for the excellence of the performers and it's historical value. I'm glad to have been able to see it but this is not a show I would long to experience again. [Broadway Musical Theatre, History]
