Frontier(s)

A movie with many violent scenes and an interesting story, although not groundbreaking. What is most interesting is the sense of reality, because everything is very raw, visceral and sometimes dirty. The performances are mostly good, except for a few characters who exaggerate their expressions and end up being unconvincing. This is a movie that manages to be very gripping, with several moments of disturbing scenes that seem like a nightmare.

A blood-spattered, though not exactly original film. It is a lot messier than expected and there's a lot of odd choices but it is still a thrilling, enticing, and unflinchingly brutal film. The plot is maybe too derivative and it doesn't attempt to hide its influences but I really dig the added political subtext and the amped up violence and gore. The film is incredibly gory and horrifically creative in its torture scenes which can be uncomfortable to watch at times. I'm not a fan of flashy editing and jumpy camerawork here which make this film feel Hollywood-ish. The performances are ok, I honestly struggle to find any likeable characters in this one. Overall, this film is decent if you're looking for something brutal, though I have to say that this one falls short compared to other New French Extremity films.
