'Field of Dreams' is a baseball film that is not about baseball. It's more about family relationships and dreams, as the title says. Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner), an Iowan farmer, hears a voice in his cornfield. It said, "If you build it, he will come." The voice was telling him to build a baseball field inside a cornfield and showed him visions of a former baseball superstar, 'Shoeless Joe' Jackson. A 1919 World Series game-fixing scandal had previously led to the lifetime ban of Jackson and seven Black Sox team players from baseball. However, only Ray could hear it. After several days of hearing the voice, his wife urges him to build the field if he so desires. They use up their life savings to build the field, while plowing under the corn crop. Afterwards, the voice then whispers, "Ease his pain." As the bank threatens foreclosure on the farm, Ray sets off in search of an old writer, Terence Mann (James Earl Jones) to understand the meaning behind the voices.

It's an interesting film, but perhaps not everyone would get. If you take the film literally, then it won't make much sense. I think the subtext and the themes drive this film. The film explores several themes, including regrets, family, and redemption. It's the idea that dreams are bigger than fate. One may not change their fate, but that doesn't mean one should give up on their dreams. This film touches upon the romanticized nostalgia that people often have about the past, and it does it very well. While it gets somewhat preachy, I didn't mind. I liked the overall acting, which helped to bring out the story's sentimental feel. I also enjoyed the storytelling, which felt magical and revealed surprising depths. The beginning of the story was charming as the plot gathers steam, and the ending had a poetic feel to it. The middle parts of the film didn't always resonate with me. I occasionally drifted through the middle parts. Overall, I thought it was a touching film, but not without its flaws.

Would I recommend this? Not a must-watch. If you like baseball or are a very sentimental person, it's worth a watch. Otherwise, I don't recommend it. If you are cynical, I would say don't watch.
