Middle-aged suburban husband Richard abruptly tells his wife, Maria, that he wants a divorce. As Richard takes up with a younger woman, Maria enjoys a night on the town with her friends and meets a younger man. Faces is a great title, as this movie gave Les Miserables a run for its money on prevalence of extreme closeups. I appreciated the independent spirit here and there was a loose, improvisational vibe to the whole thing that was fascinating. But it's a hard watch and not particularly pleasant to spend time with these characters, in the same way it's not fun to be the only sober person at a party where everybody gets wasted.

If _Husbands_ is the hangover and A _Woman Under the Influence_ is the breakdown, _Faces_ is the brutal midnight honesty—when the party's over, the lights are on, and you're forced to look at yourself.
