It’s really interesting; it includes firsthand interviews with family members and investigators on the case, but it only raises more questions than answers. I knew about the mysterious disappearance of Jacobo Grinberg, but I didn’t have all the details on the theories—like suspicions around his last partner, the distancing from Castaneda, and Margarita López Portillo’s involvement in introducing him to Pachita. Yet, it leaves more doubts than answers.[/spoiler]

Personally, I lean toward the theory that the CIA kidnapped or recruited him to exploit his knowledge for espionage work. It sounds like a Hellboy adventure. Jacobo doesn’t deserve a prosaic ending stemming from a crime of passion.

The ‘90s were wild and mysterious times. Every day on Canal 5—a kids' channel that aired cartoons and family shows—they would broadcast a segment called “Canal 5 at the Service of the Community” with reports of missing persons. Back then, at least for me, you didn’t really think about what might have happened to them. Now that I look back, many of those people likely fell victim to terrible crimes: human trafficking, murders, kidnappings. But at the time, they were just people who were gone; I assumed they were still alive, just lost or not wanting contact with their families.

Around that same time, a congressman also went missing. Then, a medium claimed to know his whereabouts, and the Attorney General’s Office took her seriously, which led them to a ranch owned by the president’s brother. Those were such strange times; I’m not sure if we were more innocent, but we certainly preferred paranormal explanations over confronting the harsh and pragmatic reality.

This documentary reminds me of that... magical realism, the kind that makes me want to think: I hope Dr. Grinberg went on to live interesting times after 1994.
