As common in episodic films, some episodes are better than others, and in this case some are more dreamlike than others. When I notices the name of Steven Spielberg in the titles I feared a more us-like and trivial plot, but fortunately it maintained well its Japanese character, both in the themes and in the way they were portraited. Is it possible I have seen here a criticism of Japanese Showa society, for instance regarding the killing of traditions, the fascism during the 30s, the grey and dull atmosphere, the conformism, the elderlies who compensate the apathy of the young, etc.? Which was Kurosawa's political stance?
