"Devil" is a low gore horror entry that does a good job of relaying some scares but is more concerned with just ratcheting up the tension between five people stuck on an elevator.
There's some crime-solving by the hero cop, played by Chris Messina. He's a very likable guy whose family was killed in a car accident by a hit-and-run driver some time earlier. His character is a lot like Mel Gibson's in "Signs" in that a bitter man discovers (or rediscovers) his faith through a very strange incident.
Messina's cop works through the incident with an entertaining Building Security team. Their banter lightens the mood just enough to release a little claustrophobic stress built up from the whole elevator problem. The whole "Devil-in-the-elevator" concept is okay but I actually forgot anything supernatural was happening at all because the people stuck in the elevator clearly hated each other and were also clearly not good people.
There is some nice camera work and a couple of fun but brief performances by Geoffrey Arend (as Vince the Salesman) and Jacob Vargas (as Ramirez the Security Guard) that stood out above the rest.
Many will dismiss this movie because M. Night Shyamalan came up with the concept but let them hate on it. This is a very taut suspenseful good time.
