Luckily the Ring of Fire heats up - because precious little else does in this really rather poor vehicle for "90210" and "Buffy" star Luke Perry. As he aged, he lost his boyish good looks and sadly the acting talent left behind was simply nowhere near enough to hold this rather fanciful sci-fi together. To be fair, he is not helped by a really indifferent bunch of C-listers in support. Indeed Adam Frost ("Capt. Hayward") doesn't look like he has started to shave yet and Natalie brown just doesn't cut it as scientist "Jen". The plot is peppered with historical personal loathing issues and if anyone says "we have a problem" one more time...? I counted eight times as their mechanised journey into the planet's core to detonate some bombs to stop us being boiled/baked/steamed alive dragged on for what seemed like an eternity. The CGI is very basic and all in all this is just sci-fi channel fodder for some past his use by date eye-candy. Fortunately, there is the extra "s" in the title...

The most memorable thing about this movie is Michael Dorn's weird use of a cigar. He always keeps a half-smoked cigar in his hand, and occasionally brings it to his mouth, but never for more than a second. He never smokes it.The only purpose it serves is to annoy the gun-toting land owners when he throws it in the grass. The cigar must have started to taste bad after he had been carrying it around and putting it in his mouth for years, and he finally decided to throw it away, but there was no trash can nearby. One of many obviously unrealistic bits in this movie is the way the Mole's TIMI device drills through rock. When that TIMI drill is running, the rock just disappears, leaving a clean tunnel for the Mole. In real life drilling, you can't just break up the rock, you have to do mucking as well. Mucking is the removal of debris from inside the tunnel--usually on a conveyor--to outside the tunnel. Otherwise, the tunnel is still full of rock, just loose instead of solid. But this magical TIMI contraption doesn't have to worry about rock debris, since TIMI can just eliminate matter from existence.
