From the outside, 18 Folgate Street, Spitalfields, could be any old, terraced house in this largely gentrified part of east London. Inside, too, there are the original features - wonky floors, fireplaces - that bring a sparkle to estate agents' eyes. But on closer inspection, things get stranger. The absence of electricity; the missing bathroom; food rotting in the fridgeless kitchen; the teeming chamber pots. But this is not one of those send-for-the- cleaners/social services/John Peel as narrator programmes; the owner, a mysterious Californian, has simply chosen to take his 18th-century restoration seriously. As the experts debate whether he is a true conservationist or bonkers, Dan Cruickshank investigates the past.
