William Friedkin's versatility is something remarkable. His filmography is impressive, covering so many different genres and themes, all in a consistent and very creative way. In this crime thriller, he creates an impactful, bold work, very well made and ahead of its time. The film has a solid structure, a strong atmosphere of tension, and a feeling of intense suspicion, which highlights Al Pacino's performance, his character uses expressions much more than words, and in this way leads the story in an intriguing way, always with unpredictable paths and striking scenes.

It's a B-movie, really. I would have loved to see Brian De Palma or Dario Argento tackle this.

It would have been interesting for Richard Gere in this role like William wanted. And as far as I can this is Ed O’Neils debut?

Uncomfortable in nature, yet still feels like it's been PC'd for the sake of Friedkin even being allowed to release it. Perhaps the first and only film of it's kind, and considering it was at the height of the leather scene, the world isnt ready for anything like this again. Raw, gritty, and forceful. It doesnt really feel like a Friedkin film, but it pushes as many boundaries as it can.
