Overview

The world has been reduced to rubble by a massive earthquake. While no one knows for sure how far the ruins stretch, or what the cause of the earthquake may be, in the heart of Seoul there is only one apartment building left standing. It is called Hwang Gung Apartments. As time passes, outsiders start coming in to Hwang Gung Apartments trying to escape the extreme cold. Before long, the apartment residents are unable to cope with the increasing numbers. Feeling a threat to their very survival, the residents enact a special measure.

An average apocalyptic film about how human nature can change in a dystopian world after a global earthquake disaster, or more precisely, what human beings can do. In the words of the film; in such an environment, a new life where the priest and the thief, the bottom and the top are now equal. If I'm not mistaken, a professor said, "After the Istanbul earthquake, they will neither be able to get in nor get out." The film prompts us to think about this. Yes, we live with ideals while living an ordinary life, but will we be able to stay close to our ideals as the conditions get harder? It is a good film, but it is overlong and has fictional problems. Especially the earthquake scenes are something strange like a tsunami. I think a planet should hit the earth for such an earthquake. It would be a better film if another disaster was chosen instead of an earthquake.

A very good dystopia movie! First of all it is not an earthquake, you will notice that on the film, such an event will not explain the lack of government. Very god moral story and what people will do to survive, a though provocative film that can really be identified like the immigrants' situation. At the beginning it starts and seams like a comedy with the funny music but it evolves fast in a dark and morale movie. I nice Korean attempt.

The film lacks depth in both narrative and characters..

Level "Entertaining" • 6 ❤ • You may or may not enjoy this.

wow .. its good you will enjoy and cry with this movie .... But the movie is superficial it would be better if it had more depth in characters development and events

Seoul destroyed in an epic earthquake, leaving only one concrete high-rise standing. However, this story transcends concrete and earthquakes; it delves into humanity, morals, the descent into survival-driven darkness, and the formation of power in society, suppressing human nature. Totally recommended.

But what's wrong with the Koreans?

Inconsistent, uneven and most annoying with lighting and colour temperatures, poor CGI and other technicalities aside, it's a surprisingly honest take on the ugly side of survival and tribalism in a post apocalyptic scenario.

Unrealistic dialogue and behaviour from the characters at certain points. Like when they are arguing about who owns their apartment, acting like the apocalypse never happened. I get this small-mindedness is a commentary on contemporary society but I also feel this ruined the potential of the story. The outside world is hardly explored and it's only at the very end we see what it's like outside the craziness of the complex.

Well done on every level but really nothing original. The decors and the (short) destruction scenes are great. The characters and drama are good though totally predictable. As for the general story, it's really exactly what you expect from a post apocalyptic survival movie. There is really nothing new, people behave exactly how you would expect, there is not a single original idea there. This is pure cliche of the genre.

Residents of Russian human settlements take note! If a disaster happens, then everyone will be for themselves. The more residents, the fewer resources. A good drama about how civilization is like eggshells, and hunger and fear will find you. And there is no beast worse than man.But only he will help

At first glance, I was expecting a different outcome in regards to how the movie managed to be so direct with the message of outoritarisim when dictatorship becomes the rule of the land once things come crumbling down. In this case, in a literal sense. The movie explored the obvious tropes that has been truth even in our life time when outority wants to keep ruling as a facade of progress, while, little by little reveals it's true colors of power and control mascarade as your neighbor. The many direct social issue queues are very present in this movie and in our face with a tremendous role from one of the characters who the represents this dilemma our word face even today and in this movie, Kim Yeong-tak. A character that embodied the world perfectly and the reprecutions of those who were impacted by that ideology. While this is a topic that by all means, is not new, the way it deliver these points across, was very impactful when you experience the journey trough the eyes of Min-seong's wife instead of partaking as an expectator and putting yourself in the shoes of one of these unfortunated characters which one of them was seong's wife, atleast for me. Making her and us understand the finale through her last scenes that exposed those who were in her position, as she finds herself in, is what made the ending of this movie and what represents, was quite the moment.

When everything falls apart, it’s hard to know what will happen, especially in relations between survivors. Will mankind pull together to promote the uncertain continuation of the species, or is it a case of every man for himself? In this South Korean disaster film about what happens when a massive (and unexplained, not to mention highly improbable) earthquake destroys all of Seoul (and beyond apparently), except for one high-rise apartment building whose residents must decide whether to save only themselves or attempt to help displaced outsiders, despite a crucial lack of resources. What follows is essentially an apocalyptic retelling of The Lord of the Flies, with occasional back story flashes in the vein of television’s Lost. However, the film’s modestly engaging psychological thriller aspects aside, much of the narrative consists of a string of predictable (and not especially original) episodic incidents, most of which consist of various factions battling one another to become the prevailing alpha dogs. It’s not something we haven’t already seen many times before. What’s more, there’s precious little in the script to make viewers want to care about these people, primarily because of its tepid character development and an overreliance on recurring conflict (yawn). Add to that obvious and heavy-handed stabs at metaphorical geopolitical symbolism, erratic shifts in overall tone (particularly in the film’s first half), and a handful of feeble attempts at comic relief, and you’ve got a picture in need of serious retooling. It’s indeed puzzling to see the many accolades that have been so generously lavished on writer-director Tae-hwa Eom’s third feature outing in light of the project’s pervasive failings. But, beyond its imposing special effects and an impressive production design, there’s not much here to write home about. Wait for this one to come to home media if you’re really interested in sitting through this overlong slog.
