No real substance to this. A lot of implied terror (screams, noises, stuff that happens off-camera) but not a lot of real horror action here. There are a few scenes/graphics that are not for the squeamish but they're so weirdly placed that it's almost (IMO) anti-climactic...or at the very least, unnecessary. Kudos to Woody Norman for playing his part beautifully, and likewise the parents (Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr) in their own roles: from the beginning, you disliked and distrusted them and (speaking only for myself) hoped they got their just rewards. Just weird all the way around but in the end, it left me completely baffled and wondering what in the world I had just watched. I don't feel like it was "a waste of time" (as some movies are) but it definitely left me dissatisfied. Too many loose ends, too vague, too many sub-stories that didn't seem to tie in...I don't know: to me, it just felt like someone tried too hard to put something together with a few too many ingredients. Like a recipe that's near completion when the chef realizes they're out of a couple of essential ingredients so they try to throw together a substitute...and the end result isn't a disaster but falls far short of what you were hoping for. That's how this felt. Opening scenes, I felt sure I was going to leave this one terrified (I have a horrible phobia of arachnids, so the name itself was enough to creep me out) and at the end of it, I was just like, _"Light a torch and be done with it."_
