In 1937, during the height of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Imperial Japanese Army has just captured Nanjing, then-capital of the Republic of China. What followed was known as the Nanking Massacre, or the Rape of Nanking, a six week period wherein tens of thousands of Chinese soldiers and civilians were killed.

Extremely hard to watch but it's excellent. If you like visual metaphors or just want to hate Japanese people for a couple days then watch this movie

The story is based on extremely shocking events that took place in Nanjing during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The film is raw, visceral and has an atmosphere of destruction, pessimism and extreme sadness. The cinematography, with black and white images, is striking, detailed and very close-up, reminiscent of a documentary. The performances are realistic, as are the scenes capturing battles, and others charged with dramatic moments, as well as disturbing images.
