Chuck Berry: The Original King of Rock 'n' Roll

Chuck Berry’s life was fascinating and amazing; this documentary is not. It touches the surface, but never digs deep. The production value is poor, and I suspect a lot of the archive footage – which it was far too little of – was ripped from YouTube. The film is extremely biased in Chuck’s favor. Hey, don’t get me wrong, I love Chuck Berry. I even saw him live on stage, and I’ll never stop defending that he was the true king of rock ’n’ roll. But, it’s not a myth that he was an a**hole most of the time. In this film, however, he’s basically portrayed as a victim of circumstances or a saint (and it made me roll my eyes and shake my head more than once while watching). You’d be better off watching the brilliant «Hail! Hail! Rock ’n’ Roll» from 1987 – or wait for a real documentary about this undisputed legend where they cover his good _and_ bad sides.
