Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Maybe it was a mistake to watch "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" directly after the wonderful "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory". Either way, I think this movie by Tim Burton from 2005 is awful. Burton's involvement is obvious from the start. The visuals clearly show the director's handwriting, as does the score by Danny Elfman and, of course, Helena Bonham Carter's inevitable appearance. But that's all okay; things only get worse when Johnny Depp appears. Because I really thought every acting decision he made was terrible. While Gene Wilder played the role of Willy Wonka with nuance, Depp is extremely one-dimensional. He doesn't manage to pull off anything more than weird. I also didn't like the story as much. Although Charlie is in the title, he gets almost nothing to do, as several important plot elements have been cut. And the rest of the children also get far too little screen time for my taste. Ultimately, this is clearly a Johnny Depp show, and even though I do like him in some films, he's really not my cup of tea in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".
