Could have been great, but held back by a tonally dissonant ending. Women gained the right to vote and patriarchy was defeated! Just don’t think too hard about Delia having to go back home to her abusive husband after the credits roll. The victorious tone of the ending feels so unearned given that her life hasn’t changed in any tangible way from the beginning of the movie. Still, there’s a lot to love here. The black-and-white cinematography looks great. And the mother-daughter relationship is very affecting, particularly the moment where Delia realizes that her daughter may be doomed to suffer the same abusive relationship that she is in, although the cartoonish solution to that dilemma is another low point.

The film never falls into femminist didascalism. A beautiful aesthetic.
