Not a bad movie but I definitely expected more from it. The story was kind of…bland. This could have been a highly emotional film but for some reason it did not do anything for me in that department.

Saoirse Ronan is such a respectable lady. In my opinion, this is the most grown-up role she has played so far. She’s amazing in this movie. The movie itself is beautifully made. Nice cinematography and costume designs make it a treat to watch.

Is it a fantasy? It’s Steve McQueen saying: I wish something like this had happened; that in a terribly adverse scenario, an Afro-descendant child could find noble Afro-descendant characters who helped him on his journey. A journey that, in reality, he wouldn’t have needed to go through if he had obeyed or trusted his mother. It’s unrealistic. Although it takes place in a real setting, I don’t find it believable. I would have preferred they included some fantastical elements to fully suspend the plausibility of what’s happening. But the production design is solid, and it’s always a pleasure to see Saoirse Ronan on screen.
