I've never been a fan of Tim Burton's aesthetic - it feels like its trying too hard to be weird. But this is one of his biggest hits and I heard positive things about the sequel, so I figured I'd give it a chance. Things started out quite optimistic, mainly because of the premise - I really do think the bones of this story had potential. Unfortunately, the Burton weirdness (combined with some dated special effects) take over pretty quickly and killed most of my interest. From the early reveal of a completely unexplained, poorly green screened, Arrakis knockoff that exists outside the house - complete with what appears to be stop-motion sandworms, the rest of the movie follows that same approach - motivated more to be random/quirky/weird than to be a compelling story. Despite having an in universe guidebook, this movie doesn't concern itself with establishing a logical/consistent world - things happen in weird ways because the filmmaker wanted them to happen that way. On the positive side, the movie is aggressively paced, so it doesn't overstay its welcome and I actually quite enjoyed the performances. Michael Keaton's weirdness as Beetlejuice was certainly more palatable than the visual and storytelling weirdness.
