A Soviet scientific expedition is being prepared as the world's first mission to planet Mars. Their space ship Homeland has been built at a space station, where the expedition awaits the command to start. An American ship Typhoon experiencing mechanical problems arrives at the same space station, secretly having the same plans for the conquest of the Red Planet. Trying to stay ahead of Soviets, they start without proper preparation, and soon are again in distress. The Homeland changes course to save the crew of Typhoon. They succeed, but find that their fuel reserves are now insufficient to get to Mars. So Homeland makes an emergency landing on an asteroid "Icarus" passing near Mars, on which they are stranded. After an attempt to send a fuel supply by unmanned rocket fails, another ship Meteor is sent with a cosmonaut on a possibly suicidal mission, to save the stranded cosmonauts.

The copy of this that I watched was on Plex On Demand and was so dark and washed out that I couldn't see what was going on. That's really no fault of the movie itself, but since it was an American International Pictures' version of a Soviet film, it was also undoubtedly edited within an inch of its life. The movie tried to relay that the stakes were high in this post-Nuclear War space race between the "Northern Hemis" and the "Southern Hemis" (i.e., U.S. and USSR). The scientific crew of each country save each other after a failed mission to Mars. It's pretty clear that this is Soviet propaganda of the gentler kind. A message that the U.S. and USSR should cooperate to make for a better world. It's an exceedingly dull movie, lacking any characters with even a trace of personality. Even though I could barely see what was going on, there were some neat miniatures and matte paintings. There were a couple of monsters on a space rock that were fighting each other that looked almost Lovecraftian, but again, I could hardly tell what was happening.
