When a hurricane hits a US Army base on the edge of the Panama Canal, an elite covert operations team of US Army Rangers recruits are on a routine jungle training exercise that goes horribly awry. Only two recruits are rescued, one of which is badly injured, but both have different accounts regarding the fate of their leader, legendary and ruthless Army Ranger Drill Sergeant Nathan West, and the rest of their platoon. Tom Hardy, an ex-army Ranger turned maverick DEA agent is brought in to solve the mystery and uncover what really happened out there.

Intelligent thriller about drug smugglers using an US military base as their operation base. Lots of unforeseeable plot twists and a fast pacing script make this a very entertaining and recommendable flick although I had a hard time following the story because of all the mentioned plot twists and different versions / possibilities of what happened.

From director John McTiernan comes exciting military thriller _Basic_. The story follows an investigation into a training accident in which four Special Forces soldiers have gone missing and are presumed dead. John Travolta, Connie Nielsen, Samuel L. Jackson, and Giovanni Ribisi lead the cast and deliver some really good performances. And the storytelling is well done; effectively building the suspense and mystery...until the last act. Unfortunately the plot tries to be a bit too clever, taking a couple of extra turns, and it ends up backfiring. But minor plot failings aside, _Basic_ is an intense and captivating drama that’s full of intrigue.

Great movie where we are left in the dark for the most part of it, only to figure everything out near the end. If the movie was 30 minutes longer, that would be all fine by me.
