This movie could have been so much better, the cast is great and some of the plot points have so much potential but things just never get fleshed out. It is the definition of average and it could have been great.
An amazingly touching and funny movie, hitting on themes generally left not discussed. Also see Shoplifters by the same writer/director.
DEEP! To the reader: We may not have met, but thank you for being born.
Slow Korean drama, seemed longer than it actually was, with a quite predictable development, without clear surprises. Not bad if you like the themes.
great cast and performances from everyone, loved the silent scenes from this movie and it's setting / mood(s) 'amp; their family-bond was fun to watch slowly build up :)
just don’t watch it guys
Hard truth presented in this movie was the take away with a message of what is one of the most polarizing topics of motherhood and decisions to throw away an unwanted child that even in other cases the child is loved, but thrown away by unfortunate circumstances. It is a sad living psychological issue that people like to discard as the most disheartening thing one can do and live by. The kids are the one that do lived the consequences and even more so, when are adopted parents that do hide the truth about their upbringing. If a community or even the government could provide better services about this issue by helping the mother with the child instead of helping them abort them or throwing away the child, we wouldn’t have to even talk about it nor use a movie like this, to send the message. Regardless the message is very clear here, a sad constant occurrences in most young mothers and their lost child's of their life.
Like Walmart mittens: warm but a little mass marketed and not easy to grasp. This film about a young mother who drops her baby off at a baby abandonment box feels like it's reaching for the same things Parasite captured but it's mostly just reaching. The cast is amazing but the story tries to cover so many different kinds of families that it spreads itself thin.
Koreeda neither judges his characters nor does he sell their vulnerability, going as far as to obscure their emotions about to burst out into the open. Broken people build a family to be a little less broken. Endearing and tragic at the same time, Broker is perhaps the unadulterated form of forgiveness.
The film means much more to the lead actor and actress than it does in the career of Koreeda for himself. Although I didn't see Song’s flying kick, such a different role from the witty Korean middle-aged uncle, the seemingly calculating but righteous little man, probably opened up a new acting route for Song Kang-ho. Lee Ji-eun's performance is a pleasant surprise, probably because I always thought she was just a girl group member and thus had a stereotype, which reminds me of Jackson Yee and his Better Days (Kwok Cheung Tsang, 2019). But as for the story itself, the main plot continues the challenge against the concept of "family" in Shoplifters (2018) which focuses on abandoned children, while Broker depicts a group of people who accept children who have been (directly or indirectly) abandoned. It's interesting to note that the way Yuwa Yonagata coaches his actors, there is a sense of being closer to Japanese films than Korean ones, probably because of the calmness in the tone… This is something that is worth deeper analysis.

This actually starts off with rather a sad indictment of modern society. The church in Busan has a "deposit your unwanted children" box. It's all heated with a jingling toy inside, but it seemed slightly surreal to think that a mother would turn up and leave her child for the church to care for. It's exactly that, however, that "Moon So-young" (Ji-eun Lee) does and it shortly afterwards, part-time employee "Dong-soo" (Gang Dong-won) deletes the video evidence and takes the child to his laundry-owning friend "Ha Sang-hyun" (Some Kang-ho). Now on the face of it, we think they are going to look after the child, but pretty soon we realise that they have far more commercial plans for this offspring. These plans looks kyboshed, though, when the mother returns to collect her child after a night of soul-searching, and the church can find no trace of the bairn. The two "brokers" conclude that it is better to tell her what happened - and hope that she believes they were acting in the best interests of the child... Meantime, two police officers are shadowing the mother and the pair with a view to an arrest for child trafficking. Add to the mix the un-related (or is it?) murder of a man in a nearby hotel and we have the ingredients for a quickly paced and amusing crime drama that is well written and characterised by the adults - and by the mischievous and very observant young orphanage escapee "Hae-jin" (Seung-soo Im). As they travel the length and breadth of the country looking for clients, they try to stay one step ahead of the increasingly involved detectives whose plans to apprehend them they successfully - if almost entirely unwittingly - manage to thwart until, well you can guess the ultimate conclusion. This is an entertaining story that knits threads of friendship, loyalty, hope and despair, comedically, but potently. Each character has their own story and also an abiding decency that though venally motivated at times, still demonstrates a degree of integrity. These guys are not just going to sell the kid to a sweat shop! It offers some food for thought, this film, without pontificating or moralising and there is loads of on screen chemistry from the characters who work well together on this most curious of road movies. Well worth a watch.
