I did the same, the start is what i call a little bit too ninja animey/space opera, the overexplaining of the narrative feels outdated, on the other the first 30 minutes also makes sure the one and only character we actual should care about is engaging, something alot of other SF movies fail with. Compared with all other SF the movie is a solid 7. Its not worth an 8 or higher, but the average rating of an 6, is just silly low. Maybe alot of people watched this movie, who already watched the anime, and were disapponted, i havent seen it, and as a standalone film the story told is solid. The last 30 minutes also makes the first 60 minutes of the movie better. This movie is what Serenity should have been like (also 2005), i rated that movie an 6, the average scoring of that movie is a 8, for me totally overrated, but i also wasnt able to remember the series firefly anymore, and i guess Serrenity doesnt work as a standalone film :) If you put a ninja girl on the cover, a ninja girl is want we want :) Theron was casted perfect.
