Overview

This is the story of an isolated Alaskan town that is plunged into darkness for a month each year when the sun sinks below the horizon. As the last rays of light fade, the town is attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires bent on an uninterrupted orgy of destruction. Only the small town's husband-and-wife Sheriff team stand between the survivors and certain destruction.

One of the best vampire movies ever!

Underrated

This is one of the best (my favorite) vampire movies. But why did they add the random Wilhelm scream in the first act? lmao I agree with the other reviews that I really wish we got more of a background on where the vampires came from and if they survived in the end. I really despise the shakey cam but I understand how it "fits" for the fast moving action scenes pacing. Gore and practical effects are amazing. The ending was a little lackluster but definitely not a bad ending. Vampire actors/actresses were amazing especially Danny Huston.

Even away from Charming, Bobby Elvis is still a tough S.O.B.! Anyway this Josh Hartnett in the lead vampire flick is a fun Action Horror film. Loved the concept, some of the kills, the pace and the ending. I also liked the way the vampires were portrayed and that no one looked any dirtier after all those days spent in hiding! I also appreciated the plan the vampires had by hunting in a town were they basically had 30 days to clean it out. But I have a feeling that they didn't count on those meddling kids and Bobby Elvis! 30 Days of Night is a film that will entertain you with some great horror action.

Started strong but it fell off as it went on and devolved. The vampires were cool but the story went from bad to worse and the ending was awful.

Disappointing. Had me bored for the most part, wasn't even scary, and the screeches the vampire-like creatures made was also obnoxious.

Although the effects are bad, and the ending is sad, its an amazing movie!

In my opinion, vampire movies are almost never scary, and the only reason I have to qualify that comment with the word "almost" is because of 30 Days of Night. It is the only vampire movie that is genuinely scary, and stands as one of the best vampire movies period. It does have the common issue of the vampires randomly being slower and weaker when fighting with our heroes, but other than that everything else is solid. This movie is an easy recommend for anyone who likes vampire movies or horror, and still good for everyone else.

I watched this in a movie theater and it was enthralling. One of the most exciting movies depicting vampires you’ll ever see. It’s not without its faults. Ahem…ship. I really enjoyed the tension, jump scares, location, atmosphere, acting (jail boy not withstanding), and the sacrificial end. Enjoy!

Hammy vampires and awful editing makes for very subpar horror movie.

Film 35 (Goal: 300) of 2024 I can see why people really like this. It's a vampire film, held in unique setting, with a great concept. And while the film revels in it's patience, putting the residents of the small town into a game of cat-and-mouse against the thing that is hunting them, I still feel the core premise could have been used to better effect. The film is gory and violent, and this is where it greatly succeeds. Josh Hartnett continues to prove what an underrated talent he is, despite Hollywood trying briefly to make him the new "It guy". Melissa George should have been in more. Ben Foster has a memorable role, that I could see viewers being on the fence about.

a good movie but nothing special.I liked the whole atmosphere and the editing.6.5/10

Definitely better the secound time around, up there with decent vampire films and a lot of fun to watch, worth your bite!

Based on a comic book series, _30 Days of Night_ is a horrifying vampire film with a unique vision. The story follows a remote Alaskan town that is laid siege to by a clan of vampires during a 30 day period when the town passes into complete darkness. Josh Hartnett and Melissa George lead the cast and give strong performances. Additionally, the film's animalistic and visceral depiction of vampires is especially terrifying. However, the storytelling is weak and the gore becomes a bit excessive at times. Still, _30 Days of Night_ is an impressive thriller with a bold vision and intense action.

6.5/10 Rather a unique take on the Vampire tale and I appreciate the mystery surrounding the killer blood suckers. I found it a interesting way that they spoke an ancient language which even with subs on it gives you fcuk all to what they are actually saying to which I found fascinating (for this movie). I loved the gore that was shown and this movie was not afraid to get the kids in on the horror of the situation, so we get a 6,7 year old Vampire girl caught and killed during feeding with a good old decapitation but they won't show a 70 year old man with dementia get killed, Okay then lol. Look as this movie aged well...no is it still worth a watch...certainly, Especially through the month of October like I did as part as my 31 days of Horror movie viewing. Also I get the amazing Beautiful Melissa George in this movie so it was always going to be a double Thumbs up from me.

I liked this until the last 30 minutes or so. The vampires were above average on the "scary" meter, but I think it was because they had piranha teeth and didn't speak English. Unless I missed something, nothing was revealed about where the vampires' came from or if they survived. That unknown made them more interesting. The last act of the movie is really bloody and violent. I have never seen such a brutal decapitation before...three hacks with an axe. It was excessive and totally took me out of the story. The sunrise scene was awfully corny for a movie that just got done showing me a head hanging from the shoulders by nothing but skin. I don't think the gore loving moviegoers care much for tragically romantic sunrises. I did like the isolation and it did feel a little "The Thing"-like on that level, which is a plus. I'll have to say I enjoyed at least the first half.

One of my favourite movies and one of the few where I actually care whether the characters live or die. All too often a horror movie is filled with obnoxious people you can't wait to be killed. This one is different. The moment where Eben's brother is forced to use the axe in the shop is heartbreaking. The atmosphere is suffocating and the cinematography is beautiful. I really love this movie.

'gt;"There is no escape. No hope. Only hunger and pain." This is one of the most brutal and cinematic vampire films out there. As I started I kept asking why this didn't get much praise when it came out. There are things that are really good: the main leads, the atmosphere, the premise... the only things that bugged me is that it supposed to spread out over 30 days but felt like it was 1-2 days.

Decent premise for the movie but I never really cared for the characters and it was too slow at times.

Interesting twist to an ages-old story. The vampires were unique, and there were some "jump scares" throughout the movie that kept you guessing. Some loose ends, though, that I didn't understand or maybe I just slept through them. I don't know... I felt like it was an okay movie that could have been tightened up in some areas but what do I know? I think the premise was there to be an incredible vampire story but the movie just seemed to slow to a crawl in too many spots and then there would be seemingly this incredible burst of activity crammed into about 120-second span before it slowed way back down. I'd like to see the overall "action" spread more evenly throughout the movie instead of the short little bursts. For that reason, it had problems keeping my attention; I kept checking my phone for updates, etc. Kind of an interesting twist there at the end but the concluding scene was very vague. I can't give this more than a "Fair" rating but I would say it's worth watching once. Not sure how the sequels will play out...

Large amount of gore. Graphic. Not a very good story. 2 hours of predictable 'plot'. Not worth my time.

I really liked this movie. Unfortunately, Danny Huston played a bit wooden and, for me at least, not scary at all. I liked that they spoke some ancient language. Underrated vampire movie for sure.

**The following is a long form review that I originally wrote in 2010.** A new-age, brilliant vampire movie that never got the acclaim it rightfully deserved. _30 Days of Night_ is one of the few films I like that I can never understand why other people don’t. Though I do prefer other movies like _Revolver, Doomsday and Donnie Darko_ to it, with those I can always understand when people don’t see in them what I do. With _30 Days of Night_, if you don’t have a problem with gore, then you shouldn’t have a problem with the film. And yet I have personal friends as well as people I’ve heard from online who totally dig horror, gore, vampires etc. and yet don’t like _30 Days of Night_, which confuses me all to Hell, let me tell you. Though I was mildly aggravated by the inconstancies in the number of vampires around, other than that I can find virtually nothing bad to say about _30 Days of Night_. Firstly you have Josh Hartnett (_The Faculty_) as Sheriff Eben, protagonist, secondly you have Danny Huston (_The Proposition_) as Marlow, leader of the vampires, who attack Alaska during the winter period of 30 days without sun (which in and of itself is an awesome concept, and thirdly there’s Ben Foster (_Pandorum_) as the vampire’s human lapdog, all of whom are personal favourites of mine. That’s not even mentioning the fact that Eben’s wife is played by Australian Melissa George (_Triangle_), who was born in my hometown, so even if she wasn’t a great actor, she’d get auto-points. Basically every point in which _30 Days of Night_ differentiates from the comic it’s based on is an improvement to the story, which is (gasp, shock, horror) a mildly realistic Vampire film. God forbid. I love the vampires in this. Though they’re not quite as sexy and well-dressed as they are in _Underworld _or as demonic as they are in _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_, they bring a totally new brutality to the vampire class. They wear what you’d expect late 30-ish people living in 2007 to wear, they’re stronger than the average human, but not impossibly so, they hunt in packs and give off bloodcurdling, atavistic shrieks (of which I give quite a good impression; sidenote) they’re unrelenting an animalistic but just as intelligent as a regular person, they’re quick, dark and deadly. There’s no camp to be found here, not always a good thing, but in _30 Days of Night_, it is. I honestly cannot recommend this one enough, despite its intense gore and general panning, I implore you to at the very least give it a go, and decide for yourself. Both the human survivors and the vampire invaders are there simply trying to stay alive, the vamps through their sadistic, systematic hunting of the local populace for their food-source, blood, and the people by trying to both hide, and fight back, but mostly the former. Ironically, it’s the “humanity” of the humans that causes every one of their downfalls, while they’re leached from above by a far superior race, who goes so far as to call humans a “plague” and invent a new language all for themselves, just so as to not have to speak the same filthy way we lower-beings do (and I mean, if your choice was between that and having to put up with American-English, wouldn’t you?). 86% -_Gimly_

Barrow, Alaska. The most northern town in the United States, where for 30 days every year it is has no sunlight. This is the perfect opportunity for a gang of merciless, & blood-thirsty vampires to feed on the remaining inhabitants of this small town, after most leave for the month of darkness. As people are leaving, and others are making preparations for their time of hibernation, mysterious occurrences are uncovered; mobile phones stolen, and destroyed, an entire team of sled dogs butchered. The ground work for the impending doom of a malevolent force. Once the killings and feedings begin there is no let up. I have watched my share of vampire films, and frankly this is definitely one of the best made, its stripped back, bare, and unromanticized. This group of vampires, led by the visceral Marlow (Houston) take no pity on the town of Barrow as they tear it apart looking for their prey, and using people as bait to lure hiding survivors out into the cold and snowed out streets of the isolated mining town. The second half of the film becomes a tale of survival, as town Sheriff Eben Olemun (Hartnett) and his soon to be ex-wife Stella (George), lead a group of survivors who manage to hide themselves away by staying in an attic, scared and cold they realize that it is only a matter of time before they are discovered and killed. Even though this is a film that does involve a fair amount of blood and gore, the film's real heart lies in the way it scares you with what it doesn't show in the lead up to the early killings, this for me is true horror, show me next to nothing, and build the most amount of tension, then deliver the shock, and you'll have me pissing my pants every time. There is also a fair amount of brutality shown, not only in how the vampires kill their prey, but also how they are dispensed by Eben and the others. On an interesting note, this is a film based on a graphic novel written by Steve Niles, who co-wrote the screenplay to the film. Niles had actually pitched the original idea as a film some years before, but reworked it to graphic novel after being knocked back by several producers, it was then picked up afterwards by one of those producers to make this film we have now.
