This film begins in the mayhem of reporters scrambling to cover a small story linked to a systemic toxin in their government. Because of the predominance of muted colours in the filming and the lack of a focal character, I didn’t begin to connect with the humanity of the struggle until Kim Tae-ri’s character is introduced. From that point on the struggle was identifiable in our present, the contest between the voice of a nation against the voice of an authoritarian wannabe. I marveled at the ferociousness of the population and wondered if that was what quelled the tyrant and if the absence of that passion for justice allows tyranny to steal the voice of a sleepy, complacent population.
For more information of the actual events see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_Democratic_Struggle?wprov=sfti1#.
I give this film a 9 (powerful) out of 10.

Heart-rending, Powerful, First-rate

1987 precisely demonstrates the harrowing, hard-hitting chapter of Korean History which serves as the revolutionary year in their constitution. Superlative performances of the ensemble cast, unrivaled writing by Kim Kyung-chan, and remarkable direction by Jang Joon-hwan make 1987 a riveting historical drama. Kim Yoon-Seok as Director Park's character is brutal and barbaric and he delivers with perfection. The uplifting finale justifies how revolutionary films are excellently made in Korean Cinema.

Kim Yoon-Seok supremacy all over the film as his gruesome performance steals the show throughout. A hard-hitting narration is coupled with a superbly executed screenplay and the emotional ending is truly inspiring. The production values instill the vibes of 1987, and the camerawork and every actor in the ensemble cast shine to make this a memorable film. If you like sharp, no-nonsense historical dramas then 1987 is a must-watch.
