I just love this film. It is too bad the series watered down all the things that really make the story rich, like the language barrier. I also have Ra's ship. So much better than the Ha'tak. I like the Ha'tak, but love Ra's ship. It is both simple and complex. Pyramids within pyramids. It is also far more ornate and posh. I know this is movie budget vs. TV budget, but still they already had the sets from the movie...

I love the alien representation of Ra much better than the Goa'uld worms. The worms always seemed really pathetic. The grey skinned, sharp toothed alien that Ra is shown to be is far more interesting and threatening.

I always wished they had made a proper movie sequel instead of the TV series, or in addition to... Spader is amazing, though I have to give Shanks credit as he is incredibly close to Spader's portrayal. RDA did a horrible job replacing Russell, though O'Neill is a disposable character in both the movie and the TV series.

I had forgotten French Stewart played Ferretti and Djimon Hounsou played Horus. I love both of those actors. Each are wonderful in their own way.

I didn't even recognize Derek Webster as Brown. When I looked at the cast and saw his picture, I was wondering what character he was. He looks so different to me with a slightly heavier set and more mature look. He is another actor I really like.

And why the name change for Sha'uri? While I like the name Sha're, I think Sha'uri is much better. That seems like an unnecessary and stupid change.

Too bad I didn't have this site over the last thirty years. I would love to know how many times I have watched this movie. It has been a while, but I don't think it will be that long before I watch it again. So good.

I've seen this movie a couple of times over the years and while it's entertaining enough, there was always something holding it back. It's got some creativity, a decent cast with Kurt Russell and James Spader and the premise of a portal to another part of the universe is interesting (and more than enough to spawn a couple DTV movies and a couple TV series), but can't really put my finger on why. **3.25/5**

Ok, this movie is pretty dated compared to modern sci-fi movies, but try to keep in mind it was first released back in 1994. This film is worth its salt simply by the virtue of being unique. To my knowledge, there hasn't been another movie to tackle this subject, and you have to admit the whole idea of extraterrestrial life building the great pyramids is pretty damn intriguing. I'm a big Kirt Russell fan but, unfortunately, he looks like he was utterly bored while making this movie.

The rare Roland Emmerich film that isn't brainless, effects-over-story mayhem. Well, not completely, anyway. It does carry a lot of the director's favorite themes, from the tortured genius who only needs the chance to prove himself to the war-hungry soldier on a suicide mission, the overbearing government suits and the eccentric, ignored true believers.

Those over-simplifications are glaring, of course, but at least there's an effort put in to expand certain characters beyond their stereotype (Kurt Russell's lingering resentment of guns, for example) and the plot itself is rich and interesting enough to paper over most of the holes. I've always had an affinity for science fiction and Egyptian history, so any merger of the two was bound to hit a sweet spot for me, and in this case the marriage works shockingly well. There's a certain other-worldliness about the pyramids, and that particular culture's system of beliefs, which lends itself well to such genre-driven filmmaking. The practical special effects come off wonderfully - hovering space pyramids and robotic Anubis-helmed enforcers - but it was still a bit early to rely on CG for this type of work and the few instances where they tried don't hold up very well.

Despite a phoned-in leading performance by James Spader, Stargate remains a quirky, unexpectedly engaging ride. Still fresh, unique and interesting as it approaches its twenty-fifth anniversary.

And only because of Stargate SG1
Stargate Atlantis
(Forget the crap that was Stargate Universe which was that bad it got itself cancelled halfway through the second season.
and I'm not going to include Stargate infinity or origins.
This Movie is not aging well and with each passing year gets more and more of a grind to get through,
Especially the unrated extended cut that I have just watched to which I found myself nodding off and had to keep rewinding it back to the parts I was missing. It's a shame because when this first came out back in 95 I bloody loved it but we have come so far from this basic put together not just in Movies but tv shows as well.....cough
star trek discovery over a million dollars per episode
which is a flawless Masterpiece of a show.
Then Stargate is one of those rare occasions where the tv show surpasses, out shines and out does the movie in every single way.
It's sad to say but everything about this movie now is so outdated and it's only going to get more so and I'm just not having as much fun as I use't to.
X final thought
7/10
would be a 5 if not for the 2 phenomenal tv shows that spawned from it.
Now
It's on to bigger and much more Awesome Stargates
Stargate Children of the gods final cut
Stargate sg1
And Stargate Atlantis
Both on blu ray boxset
Then rap it all off with both the Sg1 movies on blu ray
Now we are talking proper Stargate....Hella Yeah
