I wan hair as good as Ricardo Montalbán when I’m his age.

A little better than the 1st Star Trek movie but still not a good flick: acting and SFX are mostly bad the plot mediocre.

For some reason, this movie didn't click for me the first time I watched it a little more than a year ago. I still gave it a 8/10, but I felt underwhelmed. I think I was just a victim of hype aversion really. On this rewatch, it clicked for me for real and I enjoyed every second and suddenly its a 10/10 movie for me.

Far from being a masterpiece, it is a pleasant extended episode of the original series.

Kirk and the gang are back and face an enemy from the original series…KHAN!!! Ricardo Montalban reprises his role as the genetically superior human Khan who's out to revenge his earlier deportation that came at the hands of Kirk. If you’re a fan of the Enterprise itself you'll enjoy this because most of the movie is spent flying around raising and lowering shields and firing phasers and photon torpedoes at Khan's new ride the USS Reliant. The Genesis project is also an interesting part of the story line. Even greater appeal is brought about by the actual death of Spock. It's a very surprising development as Spock's character is probably as if not more integral to the Star Trek legend than Kirk himself. But the most appealing thing about this film is the acting (or overacting depending on your point of view) of Montalban and Shatner.

Actually it was the Directors cut I just watched, the added scenes were good and helped add context but I think I like IV and VI more.

After the first Star Trek The Motionless Picture this was a step in the right direction. Although Star Trek usually doesn´t need to rely on huge action sequences they needed this to draw an audience or the franchise could have died with this movie. And because the action is not the story but a tool to deliver it this works well.

And please, when complaining about SFX, keep in mind this is 1982. They were building actual models, CGI was in it´s infancy. Personally I always thought the movies from this period stand a better test of time because a movie from, say 2000, that uses CGI looks really old compared to one made 10 years later. With model making and actual set-building it looks more real even today if you know what I mean. But that´s just my view on SFX.
